Hong Kong Half Dollars
Valuations and Mintages from 1866 to 1905
(Only as General Information)

I always recieve inquiries about the Hong Kong coin valuations. It is hard for me to answer, as I am not a dealer or active collector. Coin valuations are generally determined by the condition of the coin, and rarity. I suppose all the coins are in a very fine condition grading. I provided with a catalog about Hong Kong coin valuations with the Hong Kong collector in mind. The values of the coin are approximate and intended only as a guide and are not offers to buy or sell but are included only as general information. For a better understanding of the Hong Kong coin valuations, I suggest you view the Standard Catalog of World Coins.]

(Prices list below are in Hong Kong Dollars)
The HK Official Exchange Rate: Since 1983, the Hong Kong dollar has been "pegged" at HK$7.8=US$1
though the exchange rate fluctuates slightly around that level.

MINTMARKS

The coins of Hong Kong have been minted at various times in five different mints; the Royal Mint, London; the Hong Kong branch mint; at James Watt & Co. Soho, Birmingham; R. Heaton & sons Ltd. (now The Mint, Birmingham Ltd.) and at the King's Norton Metal Co. ltd. Only coins struck at the latter two mints bear mintmarks to show their source. These consist of the letters "H" and "KN" repectively. The "H" mintmark first occurs on the silver issues of 1872, and on the bronze cent of 1900 (though the latter were in fact minted at Heatons considerably earlier). That of the King's Norton Metal Co. is first seen on the nickel issues of 1939. These mintmarks can be located on the various denominations as follows:-

  1. Victoria - fifty, twenty, ten and five cents, below the Queen's neck on the obverse.
  2. Victoria - one cent; above the hyphen of "HONG-KONG" on the reverse.
  3. Edward VII - five and one cent, and George V - one cent; below the hyphen.
  4. George VI - ten and five cents, and Elizabeth II - fifty, ten and five cents; below or beside the values on the reverse.
  5. Elizabeth II - dollar; below "LL" of ""DOLLAR" on the reverse.
