Hsi Ning Chung Pao
(1068AD - 1077AD )

When Dr. A.P. couple of California, USA, visited Hong Kong at the beginning of this month, they brought me with some Chinese coins as gift. All the coins were found in the USA. Unluckily, Dr. A.P. got a cold seriously before he could meet me at the last day as he stayed in Hong Kong. However, he sent me an envelope by mail which contains the old Chinese coins. The quality of the coins are not bad. Thanks to Dr. A.P. couple indeed!
Among these old cash, I found that one of the Northern Sung Dynasty cash is a Hua-Chuan Ch'ien 花穿錢. "Hua" means flower, "Chuan" is the central hole. "Hua-Chuan" means the error punch causes the central pattern of the cash looks like a 8-petalled flower. This is an error cash. As I know that the cause of Hua-Chuan Ch'ien is because the event of I-Fan 移笵 [Moving of the coin mould during manufacturing coins. Hua-Chuan Ch'ien are occasionally found as the case like this often took place in ancient China because the using of the old method to cast coins.]

Mint Evolution and Peculiarity
This Hsi Ning Chung Pao copper cash was cast in Hsi Ning Period of Emperor Shen Tsung (1067AD-1085AD) of Sung Dynasty. This is a 3-cash coin. The legend, written in orthodox scripts, is read in a clockwise direction. There is no mint mark on the reverse. Emperor Sung Shen Tsung reigned over the country for 18 years, but I think the amount of mintages of the cash during his reign is the largest in the Chinese history. 沈括 Chen Kua of Sung Dynasty mentioned about the mintage of cash in his book 夢溪筆談 "Meng-Chi Pi-Tan" of the 11th century. He wrote : "There are 36 mints in the country after the 6th year of Hsi Ning period (1073AD). They produced about 6000,000,000 pieces of cash each year (including copper cash and iron cash). That is why we can see Hsi Ning cash and Yuan Feng cash everywhere in the country." [Period Hsi Ning 1068AD-1077AD, Period Yuan Feng 1078AD-1085AD]
