Different designs of Emperor Kuang Hsu's profile on the obverse of K'ang Ting Rupee
As the Indian Rupee and Szechuan Rupee were customarily used in circularating in Tibet and K'ang Ting District during the later Qing Dynasty, a great number of these coins were minted in Kansu Mint in the Republic period. Here are 16 patterns of Kansu minted rupee, which were currented only in K'ang Ting District because of their coarse gradings and lower silver percentages. K'ang Ting Rupee also known as 紅臉藏洋 meaning Red Face Rupee as it becomes red in color after wearing. |
Notice the differences of the facial expression of the profile. Special names are applied to these coins by the Chinese collectors, such as: 大鼻 Big nose, 長臉 Long face, 高額 High forehead, 翹下巴 Convex chin, 孩子臉 Baby face, 長眉 Long eyebrow, 高耳 High ear, 開口 Openned month, 半開口 Half openned month, 閉口 Closed month and etc. |
On the reverse of the Red Face Rupee coins always have simular editions floral pattern design. This means that the first Chinese character "Szu" shaped with 2 opposit strokes in a slanting position pointed to each other inside the rectange. All the rosettes appear in a vertical position in the center of the coins.
Some of the coin images on this page are provided by Mr.KLY (病泉先生) of of Szechuan Province. If you really like this type of Tibet Rupee, you are welcome to drop him a word directly. Moreover, I would like to take this opportunity to say ''Thanks" to Mr. KLY, he is so kind as to let me use his coin images. |
